about

Openly Weep is the debut music project of Ryan Hall, Whited Sepulchre Records label owner and co-founder of both Tome to the Weather Machine and Goldrush Music Festival.

As a licensed therapist, Hall walks clients through some of the lowest moments of their lives and, through a trauma-focused lens, helps them decide what's best to let go of and what they should keep with them. Moving from this metaphorical space, the noise-floor of Overpass EP is comprised of field recordings from Hall’s life where he's come to witness the most visceral manifestations of vicarious trauma.

Prior to moving to Cincinnati, OH, Hall spent two years in the Kingdom of Eswatini as a Peace Corps Volunteer working primarily with refugees from Somalia, the DRC, and Tanzania. Hall then went on to work in street outreach in Cincinnati, where most of his days were spent underneath overpasses and in homeless camps connecting homeless youth to housing and services. Returning to these spaces with recorder in hand, Hall collected field recordings of the busy stillness of the lowveld at night and the hypnotic pulse of highway overpasses. Folding these samples into a wide range of electronic msuic-influenced tracks that pull from ambient house, techno, and UK garage, Hall attempts to reprocess these experiences of isolation and separation into new contexts where he’s felt connected to truly life-sustaining aspects of the universe, such as dancing with friends under the strong strobe of a house beat.

Written during COVID, the songs on Overpass EP are a projection into a future where these moments of connection and healing could happen again––not just with hedonistic abandon but with a sense of being humbled after a serious bout of isolation. A bit more grizzled and frayed at the edges, but very grateful.
